Prophylactic use means using it with the intention of preventing disease.

  9. Bleeding at the time of diarrhoea can be stopped, if lemon juice is taken three or four times a day.

  10. Tonsils can be prevented by consuming lemon juice with four teaspoons honey and little bit salt drop by drop.

  11. Urinary tract infections can be cleared with the help of lemon juice. Take one cup of sugarcane juice, add coconut water, ginger juice and lemon juice to it. Consume this mixture daily for about a week regularly.

  12. Headache can be relieved by applying lemon juice with cinnamon powder in the fore-head.

  13. Piles can be treated by consuming the mixture of ragi flour and lemon juice.

  14. If lemon juice is taken during the time of meals for about three to four days, the itching and pain in anus will be reduced.

  15. Itching can be reduced by applying lemon juice with sulphur.

  16. Vomiting can be prevented by consuming lemon juice. Take one cup of butter milk, add lemon juice, powdered cumin seed and cardamom. Mix it with milk and drink.

  17. Rinsing mouth with lemon juice reduces throat pain and diphtheria.

  18. Body fat can be reduced if a cup of lemon juice is taken daily during hot weather conditions.

  19. Taking a cup of butter milk with lemon juice early in the morning maintains good health.

  20. Cleansing eyes with water mixed with few drops of lemon juice, keeps your eyes clean and shining.


Modern science is finding that many of the historical claims that honey can be used in medicine may indeed be true. In the Bible (Old Testament), King Solomon said, "My son, eat thou honey, for it is good", and there are a number of reasons why it may be good.

  1. Acid refluxProfessor Mahantayya V. Math, from MGM Medical College, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, India, explained in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) that, as it is 125.9 more viscous than distilled water at 37 celsius (body temperature), honey may be helpful in preventing GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).

  2. Infantile gastroenteritisE. Haffejee and A. Moosa reported in the BMJ on a clinical study in which they used honey in oral rehydration solution in children and infants with gastroenteritis. Their aim was twofold:
    • Determine whether honey might affect the duration of acute diarrhea
    • Evaluate honey as a glucose substitute in oral rehydration
    They found that honey shortens the duration of bacterial diarrhea in infants and young children. They added that honey does not prolong non-bacterial diarrhea duration, and may safely be used as a substitute for glucose in oral rehydration solution containing electrolytes.

  3. Healing wounds and burnsThere have been some cases in which people have reported positive effects of honey in treating wounds. Hurlburt, a borderline diabetic, with recurring cellulitis and staph infections, tried taking antibiotics for months. However, they failed to alleviate the symptoms. Hulburt's physician, Jennifer Eddy of UW Health's Eau Claire Family Medicine Clinic, suggested that she should try topically applying honey. Soon after applying the honey, she began to feel better. Hulburt said that she remembered thinking holy mackerel-what a difference. It's a lot better than having to put oral antibiotics into your system.A review published in The Cochrane Library indicated that honey may be able to help heal burns, the lead author of the study said that "topical honey is cheaper than other interventions, notably oral antibiotics, which are often used and may have other deleterious side effects". However, it should be stressed that there is a lack of evidence to fully support this claim. In fact, a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases concluded that applying medical grade honey to wounds of patients has no advantage over normal antibiotic among patients undergoing dialysis.

  4. Honey for treating allergiesThere is some research to suggest that honey may be useful in minimizing seasonal allergies. The Guardian reported that honey even 'beats cough medicine' at alleviating and reducing the frequency of cough.One placebo-controlled study which included 36 people with ocular allergies, found that participants responded better to treatment with honey compared to placebo. However, a third of them reported that eating a tablespoon of honey every day was hard to tolerate due to its overly sweet taste.

Fighting infectionsIn 2010, scientists from the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam reported in FASEB Journal that honey's ability to kill bacteria lies in a protein called defensin-1.A study published in the journal Microbiology revealed that honey is effective at treating chronic wound infections and may even prevent them from developing in the first place. Dr. Rowena Jenkins and colleagues, from the University of Wales Institute, reported that honey kills bacteria by destroying key bacterial proteins. Some studies have revealed that a certain type of honey, may even be effective for the treatment of MRSA infections.Dr Jenkins concluded: "Manuka and other honeys have been known to have wound healing and anti-bacterial properties for some time. But the way in which they act is still not known. If we can discover exactly how Manuka honey inhibits MRSA it could be used more frequently as a first-line treatment for infections with bacteria that are resistant to many currently available antibiotics."Manuka honey may even help reverse bacterial resistance to antibiotics, according to research presented at the Society for General Microbiology's Spring Conference in Harrogate, UK.A study published in the journal Pediatrics, which compared honey to placebo in helping children with cough during night time, found that honey was superior. The researchers concluded "Parents rated the honey products higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief of their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to URI (Upper Respiratory Infection). Honey may be a preferable treatment for cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood URI."Natural honey better at killing bacteria than artificial honey. Kendall Powell wrote in the journal Nature that "natural honey kills bacteria three times more effectively" than an artificial honey solution of the same thickness and sugar concentration.

The most popular vinegar in the natural health community is Apple Cider Vinegar. It is claimed to lead to all sorts of beneficial effects… some of which are supported by science. This includes weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and improved symptoms of diabetes.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar is High in Acetic Acid, Which Has Potent Biological effects Vinegar is made in a two-step process, related to how alcohol is made. The first step exposes crushed apples (or apple cider) to yeast, which ferment the sugars and turn them into alcohol. In the second step, bacteria are added to the alcohol solution, which further ferment the alcohol and turn it into acetic acid, the main active compound in vinegar.In French, the word “vinegar” actually means “sour wine.”. Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (like Bragg’s) also contains “mother,” strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria that give the product a murky, cobweb-like appearance.

If you’re currently taking blood sugar lowering medications, then check with your doctor before increasing your intake of apple cider vinegar. Bottom Line: Apple cider vinegar has shown great promise in improving insulin sensitivity and helping to lower blood sugar responses after meals.

  4. There Are Some Studies Showing That Apple Cider Vinegar Can Help With Weight LossGiven that vinegar lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, it makes sense that it could help you lose weight. Several human studies suggest that vinegar can increase satiety, help you eat fewer calories and even lead to actual pounds lost on the scale. Vinegar along with high-carb meals can increase feelings of fullness and make people eat 200-275 fewer calories for the rest of the day. By reducing calorie intake, this should translate to reduced weight over time.A study in obese individuals showed that daily vinegar consumption led to reduced belly fat, waist circumference, lower blood triglycerides and weight loss:
    • 15mL (1 tablespoon): Lost 2.6 pounds, or 1.2 kilograms.

    However, keep in mind that this study went on for 12 weeks, so the true effects on body weight seem to be rather modest. That being said, just adding/subtracting single foods or ingredients rarely has a noticeable effect on weight. It’s the entire diet/lifestyle that counts. You need to combine several effective methods to see results. Overall, it seems like apple cider vinegar may be useful as a weight loss aid, mainly by promoting satiety and lowering glucose and insulin levels. But it won’t work any miracles on its own. Bottom Line: Studies suggest that vinegar can increase feelings of fullness and help people eat fewer calories, which can lead to weight loss.

  5. Apple Cider Vinegar May Have Some Benefits For Heart HealthCardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is currently the world’s biggest cause of death. It is known that several measurable biological factors are linked to either a decreased or increased risk of cardiovascular disease. There is a lot of hype online about the anti-cancer effects of apple cider vinegar. Some studies have shown that vinegar can kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. However, all of the studies on this were done in isolated cells in test tubes, or rats, which proves nothing about what happens in a living, breathing human.Additionally, most of the studies were done on rice vinegar, not apple cider vinegar. That being said, some observational studies (which don’t prove anything) have shown that vinegar ingestion is linked to decreased esophageal cancer in China, but increased bladder cancer in Serbia. Overall, it is possible that apple cider vinegar may help to prevent cancer, but it is definitely premature to make any recommendations based on the current research.Bottom Line: Some studies in test tubes and rats have shown that rice vinegar can slow the growth of cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Unfortunately, many of these claims are not supported by science. Of course, absence of proof isn’t proof that something isn’t happening and anecdote often ends up becoming supported by science down the line.

  • That being said, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for more studies, since research on natural health products like these are both few and far between. From the little evidence available, I think that apple cider vinegar may be useful and is definitely a good candidate for some self-experimentation if you’re interested in it. At the very least, apple cider vinegar seems to be safe. There are no side effects noted with normal consumption.

  • The best way to incorporate it into your diet is to use it in your cooking, for salad dressings, mayonnaise and that sort of thing. Some people also like to dilute it in water and drink it as a beverage. Common dosages range from 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 mL) to 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 mL) per day. Definitely don’t go above that, because excess consumption may have harmful effects.

It is recommended to use organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the “mother.”

  • Apple cider vinegar also has various other non-health related uses like hair conditioning, skin care, dental care, pet use and as a cleaning agent (to name a few). These can be highly useful for people who like to keep things as natural and chemical-free as possible.

  • At the end of the day, apple cider vinegar appears to be very healthy. It’s not a “miracle” or a “prevent-all” like some people seem to believe, but it does clearly have some important health benefits, especially for blood sugar and weight control.
